V1.4 patch update

V1.4 patch update

Postby Daven » Fri Jun 20, 2014 3:37 am

Hey gents, version 1.4 is out, here's the rundown:

- new deconvolution tool
- "double mesh" menu option in mesh selector - has several uses explained below
- UAC-compliant and registry-free installation
- preset browser has a new 'tag' column that lets you sort the presets by their most important tag (i.e. bass, wind)
- new Swipe' pitch tracking algorithm improves tracking accuracy for some sound samples
- many new keyboard shortcuts for improved workflow

- fixed declick when sinc resampling is selected
- fixed aliasing in presets where there's 2+ time-domain layers but no spectral layers
- fixed a lot of workflow quirks to do with reference sample modelling
- terminated a variety of little bugs

- 40+ new presets since v1.3

Long tedious explanations:

Deconvolution tool

You load an audio sample, put the playback cursor at some chosen point, and when you hit the deconvolve button
(see img) Cycle will calculate the impulse response of the single audio cycle that's displayed.

Image

The way the impulse response is generated is such that the output of a sawtooth oscillator convolved with the
impulse response will give you the same shape as the audio cycle.

Since the impulse response tends to overlap
onto successive cycles, the best samples to deconvolve from are deep bass notes - these have the longest
cycle periods so the reponse, which has a constant size, doesn't overlap as much.

Now, what is this good for??

This is effective for tones where the source of sound is a short burst of noise (such as the buzzing of lips
in brass instruments, or of a reed) that gets reverberated through the body of the instrument. In these types
of instruments, the character of the sound depends almost entirely on the shape reverberating chambers/cavities, and
this can be characterized by the impulse response.
In particular, saxophones, didgeridus, and clarinets are good candidates. The Saxophone 2 and 3 presets (demos below) used this.

"Double Mesh" Option

This menu option in the mesh selector scales the current points by 1/2, clones them then pastes the copy shifted by 1/2.
In effect, this doubles the octave of the shape.

Good uses are to raise the octave of a waveshape or to quickly increase the complexity of deformer curves or impulse responses.

Installation Changes

On Windows, install settings and settings files are moved from registry and Program Files and put in C:/Users/x/AppData/Roaming/Amaranth Audio/Cycle
which is owned by the current user, so Cycle works with UAC turned on.
You still need admin privileges to install.

New Keyboard Shortcuts

I've tried to group a bunch of shortcut keys so that you can keep your keyboard hand in one
place. So to that effect they are:

\ - changes between viewing visualizations of reference sample and current preset, like an A/B compare
return key - plays a note with the audition key's frequency
/ - toggles between viewing spectral magnitudes or spectral phases

(applicable while preset browser is hidden)
1 - set x-axis to yellow
2 - set x-axis to red
3 - set x-axis to blue
4 - sets tool to point selector/creator
5 - sets tool to pencil
6 - sets tool to axe
7 - toggle link yellow (time)
8 - toggle link red
9 - toggle link blue

'+' - sets current magnitude layer to spectral-additive mode
'-' - sets current magnitude layer to spectral-filtering mode

(home & end are not new but are shown here for consistency)
home - sets morph position to start of yellow range
shift+home - sets morph position to start of red range
ctrl+home - sets morph position to start of blue range
end - sets morph position to end of yellow range
shift+end - sets morph position to end of red range
ctrl+end - sets morph position to end of blue range

Swipe Pitch Tracking Algorithm

When you load a reference sample, the pitch of the sample is automatically tracked. Sometimes there are
errors in the estimated pitch, and the most common error is the calculated pitch is off by an octave. Swipe
performs better than the old algorithm (YIN).

However, in really low frequency sounds, YIN is more accurate. You can choose which algorithm to use in the
dropdown menu on the file open dialogue. This is only shown if you have the Use Native Dialogs preference off.

This is 7 Cycle instances using "BassTrumpet", 2x "Muted Trumpet", 2x "Trombone", and 2x "Saxophone 2"
Note that it uses FL's convolution reverb because Cycle's is somewhat lame.

Also look out for the presets "Muted Trumpet", "OhYeah", "Satisfaction", "Alto Sax 2", and "PanFlute2". They're not
best suited for using in the mix but are cool soundwise and interesting to deconstruct.

.
Well I tried everything but it still won't load in any host.

Running in 'non-admin' mode (as I'm used to):
VSTHost does not load it, Mulab and Tracktion say the plugin is 'invalid'!

So the UAC Hell is still pending! This plugin simple does not run on my computer!

I tried several plugins recently, but this is the only one that keeps giving me grief!

I cannot be going to make a purchase until this is resolved!

(And yes, I checked and altered all permissions!)

Hey Daven!

I thought I'd give another try to Cycle but I still can't use it. Just as before, Cubase crash on startup when it scan Cycle. The joke is on me, I guess.

The uninstall is still leaving its entry in the Windows Control Panel, Program and Features list. I must say that this piss me off as it means that the uninstaller is unreliable. I'll have to manually check again that this non-working demo didn't mess up my computer.

I'm trying hard to like Cycle, but Cycle doesn't like me... I'm not sure I'll have the patience to try a third time.

Too bad. Guys, really try the demo before you buy...

Sorry for your frustrations. I tested installation under the strictest UAC level without problems so I do not understand what's failing. Does running in Admin mode fix anything? I suspect it won't.

Hey Aanszen, v1.5 fixes at least one problem specific to Cubase. Unfortunately Steinberg doesn't help developers much without a (free) demo of the Cubase to test with.
